Custom Social Login Apps

WiFi Hotspot can use social login to allow guests to access WiFi using supported social network accounts.

For most deployments, the available default social login configuration is the simplest option. When required, administrators can also configure their own social application and use credentials provided by the corresponding social network.

Before You Create a Custom Social App

Social networks regularly update their developer portals, authentication requirements, application settings, permissions, and approval procedures.

Because these changes are controlled by the individual social network providers, the exact setup screens and steps may differ from older screenshots or instructions.

For this reason, always use the official developer documentation of the selected social network when creating or modifying a custom social login application.

WiFi Hotspot documentation focuses on the information required to connect the completed social application to your WiFi service rather than reproducing provider-specific setup screens that may change.

General Setup Process

The general process is similar for most supported social login providers:

  1. Create or select an application in the social network's developer portal.

  2. Enable the appropriate user authentication or sign-in functionality.

  3. Configure the redirect or callback URL required for WiFi Hotspot.

  4. Configure the permissions or scopes required for user login.

  5. Complete any verification or approval required by the social network.

  6. Obtain the application credentials provided by the social network.

  7. Enter the required credentials in WiFi Hotspot.

  8. Save the configuration.

  9. Test the complete login process from a guest device.

The exact names of settings, credentials, permissions, and approval steps depend on the social network.

Facebook

For a custom Facebook login application, create and configure the application through Meta for Developers.

Meta controls the current Facebook Login configuration, OAuth settings, redirect URI requirements, application modes, permissions, and review procedures.

Before configuring WiFi Hotspot, complete the required application setup using the latest official Meta documentation.

Official documentation:
Facebook Login – Meta for Developers

After the Facebook application is ready, enter the required application credentials in the corresponding WiFi Hotspot social login settings.

Google

For Google social login, create and configure the required OAuth/OpenID Connect credentials through the Google developer environment.

Google controls the current configuration requirements for OAuth clients, consent settings, authorized redirect URIs, credentials, and application verification.

Always follow the latest Google Identity documentation when configuring the application.

Official documentation:
Sign in with Google / OpenID Connect – Google for Developers

After the Google application is configured, enter the required credentials in WiFi Hotspot and test the login process.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn custom login applications are configured through the LinkedIn Developer platform.

Use LinkedIn's current official documentation to configure the application, enable the required sign-in product, define the redirect URL, and obtain the credentials required by WiFi Hotspot.

Official documentation:
Sign in with LinkedIn – LinkedIn Developer Documentation

Do not rely on older LinkedIn setup screenshots, as available products and authentication procedures may change.

X

Custom login with X requires an application configured through the X Developer platform.

X controls the current authentication methods, application permissions, callback or redirect URL configuration, credentials, and developer access requirements.

Use the official X developer documentation for the current application setup procedure.

Official documentation:
Authentication – X Developer Platform

After completing the X application configuration, enter the required credentials in WiFi Hotspot and test guest login.

Redirect and Callback URLs

Social login providers typically require the redirect or callback URL used after authentication to be registered with the application.

Use the exact redirect or callback URL specified in your WiFi Hotspot social login configuration.

Do not reuse redirect URLs from old documentation, screenshots, or another WiFi Hotspot installation.

The registered URL and the URL used during authentication must match the requirements of the selected social network.

Application Credentials

Depending on the provider, the credentials required by WiFi Hotspot may include values such as:

  • Application ID

  • Client ID

  • Client Secret

  • Application Secret

  • API credentials

The terminology varies between providers.

Generate or obtain these values from the official developer portal for your own social application and enter them only in the corresponding WiFi Hotspot configuration.

Keep secret credentials private and do not include them in Splash Page content or other publicly accessible areas.

Provider Approval and Verification

Some social networks may require additional application configuration, verification, or approval before an application can be used by general users.

These requirements are defined by the social network and can change independently of WiFi Hotspot.

If a custom social login works only for developer or test accounts, review the application's current status and requirements in the provider's official developer portal.

Test Custom Social Login

After configuring a custom social application:

  1. Save the social login configuration.

  2. Add or enable the corresponding social login option on the required Splash Page.

  3. Connect a test device to the guest WiFi network.

  4. Open the Splash Page.

  5. Select the social login option.

  6. Complete authentication with a test social network account.

  7. Confirm that the user returns to the WiFi Hotspot login process.

  8. Verify that Internet access is granted.

  9. Confirm that the user and session appear correctly in the WiFi Hotspot dashboard.

Test with a normal user account in addition to any developer or administrator account before making the login method available to guests.

If Social Login Stops Working

A previously working social login can stop working even if the WiFi Hotspot configuration has not been changed.

When troubleshooting, check:

  • Application status in the social network developer portal

  • Current application credentials

  • Redirect or callback URLs

  • Required permissions or scopes

  • Application approval or verification status

  • Changes announced by the social network

  • Current official authentication documentation

If the provider changed its authentication requirements, update the social application according to the provider's current instructions and then verify the corresponding settings in WiFi Hotspot.

Keep Social Login Configuration Up to Date

Social authentication is provided by external platforms whose developer requirements evolve over time.

For the most reliable setup, use WiFi Hotspot to configure the integration values required by the platform, but use the social network's official developer documentation as the authoritative source for creating and maintaining the social application.
